Political experience
Sandro Gozi has been re-elected Member of Italian Parliament under the XVI legislature for the region of Umbria.
His political career starts in 2006 with the election to the Camera dei Deputati (lower chamber of the Italian Parliament).
During the previous legislature, between 2006 and 2008, he was Chairman of the Parliamentary Oversight Bicameral Committee on the Implementation of the Schengen Agreement
, Europol
and Immigration Affairs. He was also member of the I Commission (Constitutional Affairs), as a replacement for former President Romano Prodi, and the XIV Commission (EU Politics). As Advisor to the President of the Council of Ministers he was also responsible for organizing the celebrations on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. He was the elected President of the Federalist Intergroup for the European Constitution and general vice-secretary of the European Democratic Party. In 2005 and 2006, he was also member of the electoral committee for the election campaign of Romano Prodi.
In 2007 he was a member of the Partito democratico (PD) national office and the PD Commission on Manifesto dei Valori. He was elected in the PD national assembly from the list Democratici per Velroni.
In 2008 he was nominated the group leader of PD at the Commission for European Union
politics.
Furthermore, he filled the following positions: President of the Committee responsible for examining the EU policies, Co-President of the Federalist Intergroup for the European Constitution, President of the parliamentary group of Friendship Italy-India and member of the bicameral Committee Schengen, Europol, Immigration.
In 2009, Sandro Gozi became the political coordinator of the Mozione Marino in Emilia Romagna.
The same year, he becomes the person responsible, at the national level, for the political and institutional relationships and the communication of the Mozione Marino.
In 2010 he was elected vice-president of the liberal PD. He was also put in charge of the PD European policies.
European experience
Before becoming a politician, Sandro Gozi was a member of the Italian diplomatic body. Moreover, he was also a civil servant at the European Commission.
Between 1995 and 1996, he followed a diplomatic career at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He was in charge of the economic relations with countries of Ex-Yugoslavia, Turkey, Cyprus, Albania and Greece. He worked at the wiktionary:secretariat of the Director General of Economic Affairs preparing the Italian presidency of the EU Council.
In 1996, at the Secretariat general of the European Commission, he was in charge of the relationship with the European Parliament. He took part in the negotiations relating to the euro introduction. In 1997, as an expert at the Cabinet of the Commissary Marcelino Oreja Aguirre, he took part in the Treaty of Amsterdam negotiations.
In 1998, he was the desk officer for Bosnia and Herzegovina
and regional co-operation at the Directorate General of External Relations of the European Commission.
In 2001, he took on the position of the coordinator for the "Pact of Stability" and the initiatives of regional co-operation in the Balkans.
In the following years, he was a member of the Cabinet of the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi (2000–2004) and afterward the advisor on European politics of the former President José Manuel Barroso.
During these years at the European institutions, Sandro Gozi has dealt with economic and monetary union, political and economic relations with the Balkans
, relationships with Euro-Mediterranean countries, university politics, education and youth. He mainly focused on developing and launching the new European neighborhood policy-directed at Russia, Caucasus and Mediterranean-as well as on European political and institutional reform and intercultural dialogue. He promoted various initiatives in the fields of politics, economics and culture to enforce the action and presence of Italian north-eastern and Adriatic border regions in the Balkans and to favor the participation of the Italian regions in the European politics.
He promoted new programmes (such as the new European programme Erasmus Mundus) to promote the attractiveness and boost the competitiveness of Italian and European universities.
He was actively involved into the development of the European dimension of the civil service and Italian charity work. He promoted the cooperation and the exchanges between civil services and European voluntary associations, the creation of a European humanitarian youth association and the foundation of the Anna Lindh Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures. He was also in favour of promoting concrete actions supporting the dialogue and integration of immigrants in Italy and Europe.
In 2005, he works as diplomatic advisor of Nichi Vendola, President of the Italian region of Puglia.
Moreover, he has taken part, since the beginning, in the creation of the European Democratic Party - promoted by Romano Prodi, Francesco Rutelli and François Bayrou – of which he is now the general vice-secretary.
He promoted the creation of the "democratic circles for Europe" and others circles of Margherita on European subjects.
On 22 July, he founds, together with Anna Paola Concia and Pedro Zerolo the "Free Movement of Rights" ", a European network assembling members of Parliament, activists and political leaders that promotes equal opportunities and fights against all forms of discrimination.
Finally, Sandro Gozi is member of the "Spinelli Group" which aims at promoting a federal and post-national Europe. It was founded on 15 September 2010 at the initiative of Guy Verhofstadt, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Isabelle Durant and Sylvie Goulard. To this day it also counts among its members Jacques Delors, Joschka Fischer, Mario Monti, Pat Cox and Danuta Hübner.
Teaching experience
Sandro Gozi started his university career in 1992. At that time, during two years, he is the assistant of Public and Administrative Law at the University of Bologna
. In the following years, he gave lectures and seminars at other Italian and European colleges. Between 1996 and 2010 he taught "EU Institutions and politics" at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris
and Colleges of Europe in Bruges and Parma. Moreover, he is professor of "Euro-Mediterranean politics" at Università degli studi di Lecce, of "EU law" at the Università della Calabria, of "European institutions" at the HEC Paris and "European administrative and institutional law" at the universities of Bologna and Genova. Furthermore, he has been Professor of "European politics and institutions" at the Drew University
in Madison, New Jersey, United States.
Between 1999 and 2008, he was the scientific director of the Institut Supérieur du Management Public et Politique of Paris–Bruxelles.
On 4 February 2007 Sandro Gozi was invested by the French Prime Minister with the title of Ordre des Palmes Académiques for the services given to the French culture.
Other activities
Sandro Gozi has been one of the founders of the Laboratorio Democratico Europeo (European Democratic Laboratory). This political-cultural association over which he presides since 2005 promotes debates and reflections in various Italian regions on themes such as environment and economics, competitiveness and territorial marketing, local development and social cohesion.
Since 2006 he presides over the Italy-India Association, a bi-partisan body that aims at strengthening the cultural and economic relationship between the two countries.
It counts amidst its members renowned politicians, businessmen and representatives of the art world. Its main sponsor is H.E Indian ambassador in Italy A. Khan.
Sandro Gozi is member of the scientific committee of the Parco Solidale, active in the Italian region of Veneto, promoting charity work and active civil society.

He published many pieces of writing on public law and administrative comparative law, on European institutions and politics amidst which "Governo dell’Europa" and "La Commissione europea" both published by Il Mulino in 2001 and 2005. He is the co-author, next to Sandrine Kauffer, of a book on Europe "Non ! Ce n'est pas la faute à Bruxelles", published by Le Manuscrit, in March 2007. He edited the book by Romano Prodi "La mia visione dei fatti" published by Il Mulino in 2008 and the EU law textbook "Governo e Politiche dell’Unione europea" by Neil Nugent (Il Mulino, 2008)
He is the author of the forewords in "L'assenza dei confini" by Stefani Seghetti & Paolo Soriani, published in 2007, and a joint work "The Mediterranean Region: different perspectives, common objectives" (Edizioni goliardiche, 2010).
His publications have been translated into various languages such as Polish, Ukrainian, Serb and Arab.
