The station lost its last dedicated stationmaster (Mr Newton) in the mid 1960s. There was formerly quite an extensive goods yard adjoining the station but by the 1960s this had become disused and is now completely built over by a small housing estate.
Until 1967 a service operated between Sandwich and Birkenhead Woodside via Ashford, Redhill, Reading, Oxford, Birmingham Snow Hill and Shrewsbury. The stock was provided on alternate days by successors to the Southern Railway and the Great Western. At Ashford a portion from Margate was attached/detached, likewise a Brighton portion at Redhill.

From 5 September 2011, three services daily to St Pancras station via Dover and High Speed 1 were introduced, taking approximately 80 minutes. There are two return services from St Pancras each evening.
