Katsura Sanshi is a popular TV presenter and rakugo
artist in Japan.
Sanshi's real name is "Kawamura Shizuya" (In Japanese, 河村静也 or かわむらしずや), Katsura Sanshi is his stage name
. Literally, this name means "third branch of the katsura tree, [a tree found in the moon in Japanese lore]." Sanshi received this name from his shishô (master) and one of the celebrated postwar Kamigata Rakugo greats, Katsura Bunshi V (五代目桂文枝 or ごだいめかつらぶんし, 1930-2005). Sanshi's "san" comes from, originally, being Bunshi's third deshi (pupil). "shi" was is from the second half of Bunshi's name.
