's The Vampire Chronicles
series, specifically the novel Interview with the Vampire
.
Little history or background is given to this character in the novel; his role is primarily that of a European vampire who becomes an enemy of the main character, Louis de Pointe du Lac
. In subsequent novels his character is expanded.
After fleeing from their maker, Lestat de Lioncourt
, the Creole vampires Louis and Claudia make their way to Europe to try and find other vampires and answers to the questions Lestat never answered. They make passage through a few countries before they decide to continue their search in Paris
. It is in Paris that they make the first contact with another of their kind as they left Lestat, and that vampire is Santiago.
Louis encounters Santiago while walking through the city one night, showing mimicking abilities and a mocking, playful attitude. It is also worth noting that he belonged to the brethren that was housed and performed in a Paris theater, the very same theater that Lestat founded after destroying an ancient vampire coven from the surviving members.
