She underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1998. She dislikes the term "transsexual", and is said to be "mildly peeved" about being referred to as such, stating that living as a woman was the only honest way to live her life.

She has performed with many different orchestras with an active repertoire of almost 100 concertos, and has given master classes at locations across the world.
