Sayabec is a small Quebec
municipality located in the La Matapédia Regional County Municipality
in the Bas-Saint-Laurent
region in the southeastern part of the province. Founded in 1894, the population according to the municipality's website was 1,877 in 2006. http://www.municipalitesayabec.net/
The town sits within the Appalachian mountain chain which travels throughout most of southeastern Quebec close the Maine
and New Brunswick
borders, although the municipality is located inside a small valley called the Matapedia Valley
inside the mountain range. Water sources includes the Matapedia Lake, the Blanche River
and the Sayabec River.
The territory was occupied by Micmacs First Nation groups which occupied much of the Gaspe Peninsula.
The municipality's main transportation link is nearby Quebec Route 132
which loops around the Gaspe Peninsula
back towards the Mont-Joli
area northwest of Sayabec.
