The animals are very tall; adult cows reach a weight of 600 – 700 kg, bulls 1,000 - 1,100 kg. Traditionally the Sayaguesas are used as work and draft cattle. They are black with a light eel back. The horns are similar to those of the Aurochs
. There are only a few Sayaguesas left - the breed counts as endangered.
