Geography

Schangnau has an area, , of 36.48 km² (14.1 sq mi). Of this area, 19.43 km² (7.5 sq mi) or 53.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 13.05 km² (5 sq mi) or 35.8% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.75 km² (0.289576618944401 sq mi) or 2.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.39 km² (0.150579841851089 sq mi) or 1.1% is either rivers or lakes and 2.91 km² (1.1 sq mi) or 8.0% is unproductive land.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 0.7%. 31.0% of the total land area is heavily forested and 4.0% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 26.3% is pastures and 26.1% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams. Of the unproductive areas, 3.7% is unproductive vegetation and 4.3% is too rocky for vegetation.
