Copyright Evangelism
Bourne is an avid proponent of strong copyright protection and regularly promotes copyright registration (his Twitter bio describes him as, among other things, a "defender of copyrights."). Bourne has represented that he "registers everything that survives the delete cut in the first Lightroom pass" and has noted that he has "drawers and drawers of copyright certificates." Notwithstanding Bourne's assertions, the U.S. Copyright Office public record database reveals only one copyright registration for visual art material under Bourne's name -- a web site, the registration for which was filed in 2005. Several separate registrations cover Bourne's various books.Bourne has also explained that copyright registration has served him well in infringement contexts, explaining that in the case of a "licensing question . . . fifteen minutes in the United States District Court [he] walks out with a check." A search of public court records reveals, however, that Bourne has never been involved in copyright litigation as a plaintiff.
