March 15, 2010 it was reported that Kaplan and Smith are involved in a contract dispute and are therefore not on the air anymore however this was worked out and the returned to the air in April 2010.

Kaplan can also be heard as a sideline reporter for CBS Radio's coverage of the NFL on Sunday nights.

Kaplan is the founder and General Manager of the successful horse racing group the Great Friends Stables, based in Del Mar, CA.

Additionally, Kaplan is the co founder of the Great Friends Foundation, which primarily raises money for college scholarships awarded annually to the children of San Diego based Navy and Marine families.

In 2007 Kaplan began riding a road bike, primarily as a fund raising effort for the Challenged Athletes Foundation...after successfully riding from San Francisco to San Diego, that sparked an interest in competitive triathlon. Having done 3 half Ironman races, as well as 2 International distance triathlons, in October 2010, Kaplan completed the Ford Ironman World Championships in Kona, HA. He finished the race in 13 hours and 41 minutes.
