Livingston loan him out to Morton for half of season 2004–05. After this spell he returned to Livingston and was getting a chance to play first team football under new manager Paul Lambert
. However Scott thought he was being underused by Lambert and had enjoyed his spell on loan at Morton. So a few months into 2005–06 McLaughlin signed a permanent contract with Morton.
One of the low points in his career so far was losing the play off match against Peterhead
in the 2005/2006 season
and missing the vital penalty in a shoot-out defeat to local rivals St. Mirren
in the challenge cup semi final.
McLaughlin played in the majority of games as Morton won the Scottish Football League Second Division
in 2006–07.
