The Scottish Amateur is the national amateur match play
golf
championship of Scotland
. It has been played annually since 1922 (except for war years) and is organized by the Scottish Golf Union
.
The tournament uses the matchplay format, beginning with 256 players. The first seven rounds, up to the semi-finals, are contested over 18 holes, whilst the final is currently contested over 36 holes. Eight players are given a seeding in the first round.
Match play
Match play is a scoring system for golf in which a player, or team, earns a point for each hole in which they have bested their opponents; this is as opposed to stroke play, in which the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes...
