The event was established in 1979, and it was initially contested over 1 mile and 5 furlongs. This was shortened by 2 furlongs in 1980, and then by another furlong in 1987. Until then the race had been known as the Scottish Derby, but it was given a new title, the Scottish Classic, in 1988. For a period the event was classed at Group 3 level, and it was promoted to Group 2 status in 2003. At the same time it reverted to its original title.

The Scottish Derby was last run in 2005, and it was replaced by a new event, the York Stakes
