Proyet was the season where the annual Nile flood retreated leaving a rich and fertile layer of black silt, made as the floods picked up black soil and rocks, over the land making it ideal for planting crops. The Season of the Emergence is known as Proyet in both the lunar and the civil Egyptian calendars. The months of the lunar calendar are roughly equivalent to the period from early January to early May. Since the civil calendar moved through the seasons over time, losing about one day every four years, this season does not continuously match any part of the modern calendar.
