Secretaries Cup
Encyclopedia
The Secretaries Cup is an annual college football
game between the United States Coast Guard Academy
and the United States Merchant Marine Academy
. Both academies compete in NCAA Division III athletics.
The Secretaries Cup is the biggest rivalry game of the season for both schools. Although not matching the intensity or tradition of the Army–Navy Game, the Secretaries Cup is often thought of as the small-college version of that hallowed matchup.
Once known as the "Secretary's Cup" when both academies resided in the U.S. Department of Transportation, the name of the contest was pluralized when the U.S. Coast Guard moved to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
The game alternates location between Cadet Memorial Field
in New London, Connecticut
(the location of the Coast Guard Academy), and Captain Tomb Field in Kings Point, New York
(home of the Merchant Marine Academy
).
The game, which had been played on the last Saturday of the Division III football regular schedule (generally mid-November), was recently moved to the beginning of the season to accommodate the move of the Coast Guard Academy to the New England Football Conference
. The 2010 contest was played on September 11 at USCGA, with the Coast Guard Academy winning 10–8.
There have been no ties in the series.
