The Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union
heads the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union
. The current Secretary General is Uwe Corsepius, who entered office on 26 June 2011.
With the creation of the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy in 1999, it was decided the Secretary-General would occupy that post simultaneously. However with the Lisbon Treaty the post of High Representative was merged with the External Relations Commissioners and separated from the Secretary-General of the Council, and at the meeting of the European Council
of 19 November 2009 Pierre de Boissieu
was appointed as the new secretary-general. On 26 June 2011, Uwe Corsepius took over from Pierre de Boissieu as the new secretary-general. The Council appointed Uwe Corsepius on 22 December 2009 for the period from 26 June 2011 to 30 June 2015.
As of 2010, the Secretary-General's basic pay is equal to that of a top-tier civil servant
: €17,697.68 per month.
