Sekhukhune was king of the Marota (or baPedi), in the current Mpumalanga
province, Limpopo
province, Gauteng
province of South Africa
. He became king upon his father's death in September 1861, and lived at a mountain, now known as Thaba Ya Sekhukhune, which he fortified.
The Marota lived in the land between the Vaal and Limpopo rivers. They regarded this territory as their country and admitted or excluded all corners to it.
He refused to submit to the ZAR
, leading to a war in 1876. He was also in conflict with the British who annexed the republic. The British captured him on 28 November 1879,and he was subsequently sent to Robben Island
Prison off the coast of Cape Town. During his absence as King of the Bapedi the nation started to break apart into smaller chiefdoms.In effect a cessation from the unified Bapedi nation started to occur and eventually the region under which he had previously reigned became much reduced.
Before he was released from prison he was made to sign away large portions of land into the control of the Boer Republic without any counter offer.He was released after the Pretoria Convention
and reinstated as king.
After his release from prison he became sickly and house-bound.He was murdered by his half-brother Mampuru in August 1882. Mampuru was captured and executed in Pretoria
