The tournament is hosted by top Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic
. His family purchased the ATP Tour date from the organizers of the Dutch Open, paid for the plot of land where the venue was built, and convinced the Serbian government to support the event. His uncle Goran is tournament director. Djokovic has won the tournament twice, and is the reigning champion.
