The series was prepared by the Education Committee of the 'WAY 1979' celebrations. Other committees had smaller publications.

The publication of the books was a considerable undertaking, and was made possible through the Sesquicentenary Celebrations Series co-ordinating Committee which was chaired by Dr. R.L. Vickery. The Premier of Western Australia

A notable absence from most of the publications was that of indexes - and in copies held by the State Reference Library of Western Australia - the books are accompanied by indexes compiled by Bruce Graham.

Another publication of some significance during the 1979 celebrations that did not specifically come from the University Press - but which was produced by the WA government Education department - was the title Western Australia an atlas of human endeavour
