The Severance Hospital of the Yonsei University Health System is a hospital located in Sinchon

. It is the second biggest university hospital in Korea
just behind Seoul National University Hospital
. It has 3,700 beds, approximately 3,000,000 outpatients and 1,000,000 inpatients annually and is affiliated with Yonsei University
College of Medicine. It is the oldest western-style hospital in the country, founded in 1885 as a royal hospital named "Gwanghyewon" (광혜원) by Dr. Horace N. Allen, an American missionary doctor. It was renamed Severance Hospital on the 3rd of September, 1904 and approved as a service mark in 1995. Its medical school was upgraded to "Severance Medical College" in 1947
and on the 5th January 1957, the Severance Medical College was united with Yonhee University under the name of "Yonsei University". http://www.yuhs.or.kr/en/contents.asp?cat_no=2740. It is part of the Yonsei University Health System which has 7,000 employees, including 2,000 physicians and 5,000 other personnel. 24,000 students have graduated from its medical schools.
Former South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung died there of multiple organ dysfunction resulting from pneumonia.
