, and is named after the Shakespear family which bought the land in the 1880s from local Maori.

The Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society is currently (2010) fundraising to construct a pest/predator-proof fence across the tip of the peninsula to protect the park's birdlife (much of it from nearby Tiritiri Matangi
