. Although it is run by (and keeps many ties with) Sydney's Jewish community, observes Jewish culture and follows kosher rules, the college is open to people of all religions, creeds and backgrounds. The college is run by The Shalom Institute, a not-for-profit Jewish educational organisation. It also plays host to a number of organisations and projects from within the Jewish, academic and general communities. The college was founded in 1973. In 2006 the college housed 128 students from many countries, in both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Shalom College is one of the most modern colleges on the Kensington campus with new rooms (Barker Wing) built in 2003 and old rooms (Oval Wing) renovated in 2005. Most of the rooms in the college have private or shared balconies, many overlooking the village green. The newer wing of the college includes personal ensuites. The two wings are connected through two kitchenette

s, a pool room, a minor common room and a TV room. Residents have access at all times to six academic tutors-in-residence specialising in a large range of disciplines.
