Shamong was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature
on February 19, 1852, from portions of Medford Township, Southampton Township
and Washington Township
. Portions of the township were taken to form Woodland Township
(March 7, 1866), and Tabernacle Township
(March 22, 1901).
