The Shaw Leadership Program is a nationally recognized four-year intensive leadership development program at Boston College
. Twenty incoming freshman to Boston College who complete a separate application for the program are selected each year to become members. It was established in 1993 by Dr. Robert F. Capalbo.
Sophomore, Junior, and Senior members of the program take part in a personal tailored leadership and life skill development program, as well as engage with the entire program through seminars and service.
In addition to the program, Shaw members participate in a variety of extracurricular activities introducing them to service and entrepreneurial organizations, leaders, and practices. Activities include regular attendance at university lectures by field experts and entrepreneurs, service site visits, internships, mentor relationships, service projects, and venture competitions. Students are expected to participate in extracurricular activities and events.
Shaw Leadership Program members have been the recipients of some of the highest awards offered by Boston College including Advanced Study Grants, Undergraduate Research Fellowships, the Martin Luther King Junior Award, and the Reverend Edward H. Finnegan, SJ, Award. Program members have also been honored as recipients of prestigious national awards such as Fulbright, Goldwater, and Truman Scholarships.

History
The Shaw Leadership Program was established in 1993 by then Director of Residential Life Dr. Robert F. Capalbo. The program is housed within Boston College’s historic Shaw House is located on Upper Campus, which also serves as the residence of all freshman members of the program. The program and the house itself are named in honor of Rev. Joseph Coolidge Shaw, SJ, who gave his library to what would one day become Boston College when he entered the Jesuit order. The University acquired Shaw House in 1962.Program Overview
Program members partake in an intensive leadership development curriculum throughout their undergraduate years. Freshman members reside together in the Shaw House and partake in weekly leadership and life skill development seminars instructed by experts in the related topic fields. They also engage with the local Boston community through frequent community service events.
