On January 1, 1948, Shimada was elevated to city status. Yaizu became a city on March 1, 1951, and Ogawa Village was elevated to town status on October 1, 1952. In a round of consolidation from 1953 to 1956, the number of villages was reduced from 22 to zero, and Fujieda was proclaimed a city on March 31, 1954.
