The term engenders visions of "pounding the pavement" in search of the truth; digging for the Pulitzer Prize story of the year.

One reporter said, “[Our] reporting hasn't changed. I don't think it ever will. It's basic shoe leather reporting, hunting down sources and documents and confirming authenticity. That's always been [paramount].” Others feel that ‘old-fashioned’ reliable reporting is fading fast.
