Silsand

Silsand is a village in the municipality of Lenvik
in Troms
county, Norway
. It has a population (2009) of 1,313, making it the largest village on the island of Senja
. Silsand is now considered a suburb of the neighboring town of Finnsnes
, which is located across the Gisundet strait. Storevatnet lake is located just northwest of the town.
The village consisted of nothing more than a few houses until the bridge replaced the ferry in 1972. With the building of the Gisund Bridge
and the change in demographics in the rural areas of Norway, the population has grown rather rapidly since the early 1980s. Most of the new inhabitants coming from other smaller villages in the Midt-Troms area.
Silsand has 3 schools: Småslettan skole (1-4th grade), Silsand barneskole (5-7th grade) and Silsand ungdomsskole (8-10th grade). FK Senja football club is based in Silsand, with their home field in the neighboring village of Laukhella
. FK Senja played in the Norwegian third division
from 2000 to 2007, until they finally made to get to the Fair Play ligaen after winning a game against Kirkenes IF. They worked hard for 7 years, and they got what the wanted.
