from 1986 to 2007. He was created a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order

He was born in 1932, the son of Sir David Bowes-Lyon
, who also served as Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. On 11 April 1966, he married Caroline Mary Victoria Pike and they have four children; Rosemary (b. 1968), Fergus (b. 1970), David (b. 1973), and Andrew (b. 1979).
