, having succeeded to the title on the death of his father David Cairns, 5th Earl Cairns
on 21 March 1989.
The son of Rear-Admiral David Charles Cairns, 5th Earl Cairns and Barbara Jeanne Harrisson Burgess, he married Amanda Mary Heathcoat-Amory, daughter of Major Edward Fitzgerald Heathcoat-Amory and Sonia Myrtle Denison, on 4 February 1964.
Simon Dallas Cairns was educated at Eton College
and then at Trinity College, Cambridge
. He was Managing Director of S. G. Warburg & Co.
between 1979 and 1985, and was Managing Director of Mercury Securities plc between 1981 and 1984. He was Chairman of Voluntary Service Overseas
(VSO) between 1981 and 1992. He was Vice-Chairman of Mercury Securities plc between 1984 and 1986, and was a Director of S. G. Warburg & Co.
between 1985 and 1995.
Cairns succeeded to the titles of 6th Viscount Garmoyle, Co. Antrim
, 6th Earl Cairns and 6th Baron Cairns of Garmoyle, Co. Antrim on the death of his father David Cairns
, on 21 March 1989. He held the office of Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall
