The Singapore Red Cross started out in 30 September 1949 as part of the British Red Cross Society
. In 6 April 1973, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) was officially incorporated by the Parliament of Singapore. It was appointed as the National Blood Donor Recruiter by the Health Sciences Authority
(HSA) in 2001.
The SRC is part of a world-wide, non-political, non-religious movement which bases its work on the fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. An independent humanitarian organisation, who raise their own funds in serving humanity and furthering their work locally and internationally.
The general management is overseen by the Executive Committee, with operation responsibilities vested in the Red Cross Youth Division, the Adult Volunteer Division, the Chapters Division, various Standing Committees, Task Forces and Resource Panels. Implementation of the policies and directives laid down by the Council is done by the Secretariat which is headed by the Secretary General. Volunteers and staff work together in organising and implementing the activities and programmes of the SRC.

Organisation
The governing of SRC is done by a 27 to 33-member Council headed by a Chairman who is appointed by the President of the Republic of Singapore, the Patron of the SRC. The Council is responsible for pursuing the objectives of the SRC as laid down by the Act of Parliament and its Constitution.
