Solar powered calculators are hand-held electronic calculators powered by photovoltaic panels mounted on the device. They were introduced at the end of the 1970s.

Features

Solar calculators' displays utilize Vacuum fluorescent displays as they are power efficient and is capable of operating in the low voltage range of 1.5 - 2 V. Features on other models includes a light pipe used to converge light onto the solar cells to power the calculator.

Advantages

• Solar-powered calculators would be advantageous over conventional battery operated electronic calculator as the battery replacement need not be considered.

Drawbacks

• Solar calculators may not work well in indoor conditions under ambient lighting as sufficient lighting is not available.
