Sorting (sediment)
Encyclopedia
Sorting indicates the distribution of grain size of sediment
s, either in unconsolidated deposits or in sedimentary rock
s. Poorly sorted indicates that the sediment sizes are mixed (large variance
); whereas well sorted indicates that the sediment sizes are similar (low variance).
The degree of sorting may also indicate the energy and/or duration of deposition. Well sorted rocks are generally porous, while poorly sorted rocks have low porosity
.
Sorting is the degree to which particles are the same size
Sediment
Sediment is naturally occurring material that is broken down by processes of weathering and erosion, and is subsequently transported by the action of fluids such as wind, water, or ice, and/or by the force of gravity acting on the particle itself....

Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rock are types of rock that are formed by the deposition of material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water. Sedimentation is the collective name for processes that cause mineral and/or organic particles to settle and accumulate or minerals to precipitate from a solution....

Variance
In probability theory and statistics, the variance is a measure of how far a set of numbers is spread out. It is one of several descriptors of a probability distribution, describing how far the numbers lie from the mean . In particular, the variance is one of the moments of a distribution...

Porosity
Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0–1, or as a percentage between 0–100%...

The classes are distinguished in the field by the 'textural feel' which can be further clarified by separating the relative...
