The SEA Cup Tournament was originally founded by Julian Verdina in 1988, and then taken over by Dave Phelp (now retired to Aberdeen) in 1989. Other early names associated with the tournament are Peter Dixon (ANZA), Jim Boyd, Terry Thodesen, David Straffon, John Stamp (Bangkok), and Gerry Burgon (Jakarta).

Up to 2002, tournaments were held at Under 12 and Under 15 levels. From the 2003 tournament, the Under 12 age group was changed to be Under 13. An Under 18 age group was held for the 1st time in 2008. In 2010, an award was inaugurated for the Overall SEA Cup Champions for the year.

A memorable moment in SEA Cup history came in the 2009 tournament in Jakarta, where the Singapore U15 team impressively became champions winning all 3 games whilst scoring 19 goals and conceding none.

In 2010, the Kuala Lumpur teams went further winning all 3 age groups (U13, U15 & U18), an achievement which had not previously been achieved in the SEA Cup, although prior to 2008 three countries had won both U12/U13 & U15 in a single year. KLYS became the first winners of the Overall Champions award. Led by Head Coach and ex-Argentine national player Luis Pablo Pozzuto, KLYS have yet to be beaten in the U18 category, going 3 years unbeaten.

In 2011, Kuala Lumpur made history by retaining the Overall Champions Award and recording wins in all 3 age groups (U13, U15 and U18), led by Head Coach and ex-Argentine national player Luis Pablo Pozzuto. Besides that they also recorded a win in the first ever Girls Invitational through their girls football team GFKL (Girls Football Kuala Lumpur) led by GFKL Head Coach William Costley.

2010 was the 23rd Annual Tournament and was held in Singapore. The 2011 tournament was hosted by Malaysia by Kuala Lumpur in February 2011. The 24th Annual Tournament will be hosted in Thailand by Bangkok.
