Artists join businesses, artist studios, and galleries, which in turn open their doors to the public throughout the post-industrial section of Burlington, known as the “South End”.

The principle behind the event is that of fusing culture and commerce, for which participating sites allow artists to showcase their work in non-traditional settings: offices, stores, restaurants, studios, etc. This promotes a mutually symbiotic relationship, by having businesses benefit from the increased foot traffic of art lovers, and artists benefit from exposure to customers who may not otherwise see their works in non-traditional display environments.

The first Art Hop in 1993 had a little less than thirty artists and a dozen sites participating. In 2008, over 600 artists showcased their works in over 100 sites throughout the South End of Burlington. The event takes place on the Friday and Saturday following Labor Day in September, and it receives extensive media coverage from local media outlets, such as The Burlington Free Press, WCAX Channel 3, and Weekly Tabloid Seven Days (newspaper)
