Encyclopedia
Southside Baptist Christian School is located on the southside of Richmond, Virginia. It is a Christian school
part of Southside Baptist Ministries. The school is mostly known for its basketball, volleyball and ensemble which perform throughout the city.
Additionally, students are required to participate in a monthly community service project. The school itself services the inner-city students of Richmond, VA and is heavily dependent on community/corporate support.
ATHLETICS
The Hornets of Southside Baptist Christian School have established themselves as a "powerhouse" department committed to excellence in performance as well as clear, distinct Christian character both on and off the court. SBCS participates in boy's JV and Varsity Basketball, girl's Varsity Volleyball and Track & Field. Southside Baptist Christian School's athletic department competes in the following athletic conferences:
VISVA (Virginia Independent Schools Volleyball Association)
VISBA (Virginia Independent Schools Basketball Association)
Athletics and physical education are an integral part of the life of Southside Baptist Christian School students. All students are expected to participate in physical education with their classmates. Those Middle and High school students who partake in team competition have a responsibility to manage their time in order to commit fully to their teams, their teammates and the obligations that come with team participation.
As in classroom attendance, it is expected that parents will understand and explain the significance of this requirement to their children. Learning to balance coursework and athletics can be challenging, but mastering this process is one of the great benefits of a stringent educational athletic program.
With regard to interscholastic sports, coaches and athletes are expected to represent SBCS with the highest level of respect, integrity, and Christian character both on and off the court. As an institution, SBCS rejects a "win at all cost" approach to competition and values Christ-like pursuit of victory over scoreboard results.
The Hornets strive to win games, meets, matches and championships, but never at the expense of its biblical core values. SBCS celebrates the Christ-like virtues that
competition can instill, such as selflessness, sacrifice, servant leadership, teamwork, and resilience. We recognize that success in these areas will ultimately produce godly results.
Southside Baptist Christian School uses athletics as a tool to teach more than skill. Our coaches are mature and experienced. While every effort is made to win each contest, we strive to keep a proper balance of eternal values.
