Spring Hill Mall
Encyclopedia
Spring Hill Mall, opened in October 1980 is a regional shopping mall
in West Dundee, Illinois
and Carpentersville, Illinois
. Spring Hill was developed by Homart Development Company
, then owned by Sears, Roebuck & Company. The mall opened with two anchors, Marshall Field & Company and Sears, Roebuck & Company. Originally, Carson Pirie Scott
was scheduled to open an anchor store at the location now occupied by Kohl's (originally MainStreet
); however, Carson's store was cancelled, although the chain did open a Honey Bear Farm store in the west wing of the mall in October 1980. In later years, Carson's itself did open at the mall, by acquiring former anchor Bergner's
(which was added in 1981 as Bergner-Weise). Bergner's parent company, P.A. Bergner & Co acquired Carson Pirie Scott and Bergner's elected to re-brand its Chicago-area Bergner stores, including Spring Hill Mall as Carson Pirie Scott. The vacant anchor location on the Northwest Side of the mall opened in 1984 as Joseph Spiess Company, an Elgin, Illinois-based specialty department store company. This store was later Wickes Furniture
and then became a Steve and Barry's (closed in February 2009). Currently it is Home Furniture Mart.
On January 24, JCPenney announced that they would close this location by June 1, 2011.
Today, the 4 anchor stores are Carson Pirie Scott
, Kohl's
, Macy's
and Sears, with a vacant sitting in the former JCPenney. The Marshall Field's store was renamed Macy's on September 9, 2006.
The property is owned by General Growth Properties

The site was previously the D. Hill Nursery, which relocated to Union, Illinois
to make way for the mall.http://www.dhillnursery.com/homepage1/contactusourlocation.html
The mall is actually in two cities. The two anchor wings that include Carson Pirie Scott and Kohl's are located in Carpentersville, Illinois. To this day, Carpentersville retains control over the issuance of building permits and business licenses and the village provides police and fire services to that portion of the mall solely inside Carpentersville village limits.
