Casa Venegas

St John of God Hospital Burwood operates Casa Venegas, an outreach service for homeless people with mental health problems. St John of God Casa Venegas provides home-style accommodation on a medium to long-term basis, in west and inner city.

The “Casa Venegas” name comes from a story about the hospital’s patron saint, St John of God. In the 16th century, John of God ministered to the sick in Granada, Spain; at night, he invited the poor and weak to shelter with him in a vestibule at the home of wealthy citizen Don Miguel. The house was named “Casa Venegas”.
