Standoff missiles are missiles "which may be launched at a distance sufficient to allow attacking personnel to evade defensive fire from the target area." Typically, they are used against land- and sea-based targets in an offensive operation. The name is derived from two characteristics: first is the ability to engage the target while outside of the defenders' ability to engage the attacker; second, their main goal is to break an opponent's defensive line and push them back — essentially breaking a standoff.
