Stanground College

Stanground College is a co-educational foundation Comprehensive School
and specialist college for sport, in the city of Peterborough
in the United Kingdom
. It has capacity for around 1,500 pupils aged 11 to 18, of whom almost 300 are in the Sixth Form
. The school was officially opened by Alderman Dr. Jack Hunt, chairman of the Education Committee of the then Huntingdon and Peterborough
County Council, after whom another local school is named.
The College is due to be fully rebuilt by 2013. This will be beneficial in terms of the facilities available to students at the college and may lead to an improvement in staff morale. This will also solve the many maintenance issues with the current building which have led to the college being closed to students on several occasions recently.
Most students are of a British heritage and the majority have English as their first language, however, an increasing number of students are joining the college having recently arrived in the United Kingdom. Over 10% of students are now from Eastern Europe and many speak little or no English. The proportion of students with learning difficulties or disabilities is above the national average. The economic backgrounds of students are broadly in line with the national average. The College includes a newly refurbished pool open for public swimming.
The Italian honorary consular agency for Peterborough is located on the premises.
Starting in 2011 Stanground College will be rebuilding the school as the old one is outdated. It will be built around the old school and when it is expected to be complete in 2013 they will demolish the old school. Due to the government cut backs, Stanground College's plan to build the new school was expected to be cancelled but will now go ahead.
Due to the new school planning, current Principal Malcolm Ellison will vacate his position to act as a governor to the new school. He will return when the new school's planning has finished. In the mean time, we will be replaced by Ali Story while James Scarrott joins Helen Cassady as Vice Principal. His duties as Assistant Principal will be covered by the other Assistant Principals, Tony Meneaugh and Jo Myhill-Johnson. Student Progress Leader, Sara Lowe, has been promoted to Acting Assistant Principal in addition.
