Nearly the entire route is a divided highway
. One of the sole remaining two-lane segments is a 9.5 miles (15.3 km) stretch extending from Frankston
to Pert, however starting in early 2007, the right of way was being cleared and graded for the eventual upgrade to a divided highway. The route is concurrent with US 271 on two separate sections, one in the city of Tyler, and once in the town of Gilmer. SH 155 is the shorter route of the two between these cities.
From Palestine to Linden, SH 155 is part of the Blue Star Memorial Highway

. SH 155 was instead assigned to the route between Gilmer and Tyler. The route was extended south to Palestine and north to Linden in 1944, completing the current route.
