Steadman Upham

Steadman Upham was named president of The University of Tulsa in June 2004, after having served for six years as president of Claremont Graduate University
. Prior to this time, he was vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School and professor of archaeology at the University of Oregon
.
On April 12, 2011, Upham announced his intention to retire as president of The University of Tulsa effective June 30, 2012. Uhpham will continue to hold the title of President Emeritus
and serve as a professor at the university.

Since becoming President of the University of Tulsa
in 2004, Upham has overseen several major changes to the university, including a massive construction schedule and a $400,000,000 fundraising campaign. Upham also served as a delegate on a trip led by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
to East Asia
designed to facilitate greater international cooperation in education and study abroad.
Dr. Upham has written numerous books and scholarly articles on the prehistory and archaeology of the American Southwest. He has received several awards for his teaching and research while serving as a faculty member at New Mexico State University
and the University of Oregon. He is a fellow of the American Anthropological Association
, a member of Sigma Xi
, the international honor society of scientific and engineering research, and a member of the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi
.
He has been president of both the National Physical Science Consortium and the Western Association of Graduate Schools. He was the 1999 chair of the Council of Graduate Schools’ Board of Directors, and has served in the executive committees of the Association of Graduate Schools of the Association of American Universities
and the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. He also served as commissioner for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission.
Upham is currently a director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association
(NCAA). Other directorships include the American Mutual Funds, Capital Group Companies, St. Francis Health System, the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, and the Oklahoma Conference on Community and Justice.
Affectionately referred to as "Uncle Stead" by many University of Tulsa
students Upham became a fixture on the campus. Upham is a popular figure at Tulsa and can frequently be seen riding a golf cart on campus. Students dining in the campus cafeteria
often call their meal plan credits "Stead bucks."
