Stefan Matthew Wever is a former professional baseball
pitcher
. He made his Major League Baseball
debut, incidentally his only game, with the New York Yankees
in .
Wever graduated from Lowell High School (San Francisco, CA) in 1976. Standing at 6 ft. 8 inches tall, he is one of only two Lowell alumni to make a pitching appearance in the major leagues. (The other Lowell alum who pitched in the majors was Ed Mayer from the Lowell class of 1950 who pitched for the Chicago Cubs in 1958 and 1959.) After dominating the San Francisco section in high school, Wever lettered at the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he garnered interest from numerous professional scouts.
After finishing his career at UCSB, Wever was drafted into the New York Yankees
organization. In 1982, after winning the Southern League
(AA) Pitcher of the Year award, accomplishing the rare Pitcher's Triple Crown (leading the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts) he made the rare jump from AA to the major leagues. Before being called up to the major leagues, Wever compiled an impressive 41-18 record with a 2.68 E.R.A. in the minors. His first and only major league appearance came against the Milwaukee Brewers on 17 September 1982. He pitched for 2⅔ innings, but tore his rotator cuff in the process, ending his career. He is one of the few pitchers to face two future Hall of Famers as his first two batters (Paul Molitor

).
Wever continued his education during the off-season while rapidly climbing through the Yankee system at the University of California at Berkeley from where he received a BA in English Literature.
Now retired from the game of baseball, Wever owns the Horseshoe Tavern, a popular and legendary San Francisco bar, is an accomplished pianist, voracious reader, and doting father to his teenage daughter.
Wever now coaches clinics, camps, and travel ball teams with Future Prospects Baseball for boys ranging from age 10-16. He was recently (9/9/2008) named Head Varsity Baseball Coach at Redwood High School in Larkspur of Marin County, CA.
