. In episode #480, "Mannon" [named after the character Forrest plays], he shoots Festus and leaves him to die and steals the deputy's mule to make his way to Dodge where he plans to kill Dillon. Finding the marshal gone, he terrorizes the townsfolk and ultimately brutally beats and abuses Miss Kitty, setting the stage for the final confrontation as Dillon arrives. The expected shootout soon takes place, yet without the conclusion Mannon expects as Dillon shoots him (after being shot first) just before the end credits roll. Then over 18 years later in the first Gunsmoke "reunion" movie Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge

, it is explained that instead of actually dying, Mannon was arrested and has spent 12 years in prison. Upon his release he sets out on a trail of vengeance against all those who put him there. A trail that leads him back to Dodge where he apprehends Miss Kitty and abuses her while awaiting Dillon's return. Which again leads to the expected gunfight in which Dillon finally kills Mannon in the end.
In the 1973 Gunsmoke episode of the "Widow Maker" Dillon sets up a senerio of killing Forrest playing "Scott Coltrane" in a gunfight in which Doc pronounces him dead with a complete funeral and the selling of his ranch, whereby Scott can now lead the quiet life with his wife and unborn child after his reputation had caught up with him as the fastest gun alive. Forrest was
able to play such a dangerous and menacing character that Gunsmoke's producers approved him as the only man who would be credible as a faster gun than Dillon not once but twice!
