Georganas contested Hindmarsh
at the 1998 election and the 2001 election before winning it at the 2004 election, replacing the retiring incumbent, Christine Gallus
from the Liberal Party
. Georganas defeated Liberal candidate Simon Birmingham
by only 108 votes, or by 0.06 percent of the two-party vote. He easily retained the seat picking up a five percent two-party swing when his party won government at the 2007 election.
