A stone setter is a specialist within the jewellery arts field who is trained in the art of setting of gemstones
into jewellery. Historically, stone-setting was a specialized skill, taught for example, in European trade schools. Typically an individual trained in this tradition, were considered specialized technicians who stuck to their specialty of setting stones only, and didn't typically cross over into gold smithing, or other areas of jewellery making. Nowadays however, stone-setting is considered less of a specialty and is taught as part of the overall training of being a bench jeweler
