Straža is a small town and a municipality
in southeastern Slovenia
. It lies on the left bank of the river Krka
in the traditional region of Lower Carniola
. The municipality was created in 2006 when it split from Novo Mesto
. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region
. The town itself has close to 2000 inhabitants with over 3500 in the entire municipality. The main employer is the company Novoles, based in the town as well as a number od smaller companies. There are many vineyard
s in the area.
There are two churches in the settlement. One is dedicated to Saint Thomas
and belongs to the Vavta vas

. It is a medieval building that was restyled in the Baroque
in the late 17th century. The second is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary
and belongs to the Prečna
