. It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town is Strzelce Opolskie
, which lies 31 kilometres (19 mi) south-east of the regional capital Opole
. The county contains four other towns: Zawadzkie

As of 2006 its total population is 80,828, out of which the population of Strzelce Opolskie is 20,059, that of Zawadzkie is 8,331, that of Kolonowskie is 3,432, that of Leśnica is 2,945, that of Ujazd is 1,652, and the rural population is 44,409.
