Playoff History

Summerfield made it to the finals for the first time in any sport in 1984. They beat Breckenridge 2-0. Summerfield was coached by Deanne Vanderpool.

Did not make out of districts
  • 2003

Won Districts. Went to regional at Climax Scott High School. Played Camden Frontier in the first game and beat them 9-2. In the next game Summerfield played they lost 5-4 in nine innings verses Burr Oak (Burr Oak would lose in the next round 7-3).
  • 2004

Did not make out of districts
  • 2005

Won Districts. Went to regional at Centreville and played Colon in the first game. Summerfield Won 4-1. The next game Summerfield had to play was verses TCC rival Morenci. Summerfield won 2-1 and would advance to the quarterfinal game verses Muskegon Catholic Central. The quarterfinal game would be played at Richard Gull Lake. Summerfield would lose a close game 2-0 (Muskegon CC would go to the finals but lose 11-0 to Coleman).
  • 2006

The 2006 Postseason started by winning districts and advancing to regional at Bailey Park. The first game was verses Waldron and Summerfield beat them 9-1. In the second game Summerfield had to play Centreville. Summerfield won there second straight regional title. In the quarterfinal game Summerfield had to travel again to the other side of the state to Kalamazoo Comstock to play Martin. Summerfield killed Martin 11-1 and advanced back to Bailey Park for the Semi-Finals. In the Semi-Finals Summerfield had to play Ellsworth. Summerfield Ashley Gilson and Randi Roscoe went 3-4 on the day. Also Jordan Ratliff went 2-3 with 3 RBI and pitched 7 innings and only one hit and struck out 7 to a Summerfield 4-1 Semi-Final win. In the Finals Summerfield had a big test. They had to play Allen Park Cabrini. Allen Park went 39-0 on the season and had the nations longest winning steak. Summerfield lost 2-0. Summerfield Heather Carlson and Randi Rosco had the only two hit for Summerfield. Jordan Ratliff also Pitched well going seven innings with only giving up four hits and no earned runs.
  • 2011

Road to the finals
They playoffs started really good the team only had one other team in the district Britton-Deerfield who they beat twice (15-0 in 3inn. twice) during the regular season. Summerfield beat BD 10-0 in six innings to move one step closer to a title. They next weekend was the regional in Concord they first team they faced was Camden-Frontier. Summerfield beat Camden-Frontier 7-0 and next in there way was Tri-County Conference rival Morenci. Summerfield played Morenci twice in the regular season beating them twice 6-0 and 3-0. In the end Summerfield beat Morenci 9-3 to capture the Regional title for the second year in a row. Summerfield only has three more games left to repeat as champions. The team did not have to go far for the quarterfinal game vs Allen Park Inter City Baptist at Adrian College. Summerfield ran right over Allen Park Inter City Baptist 11-0 in five innings. In that game Emily Puterbaugh pitch a perfect game. There was only two more teams in their way to the title. they next game was in Bailey Park in Battle Creek. The first team they played in the Semi-Final game was Breckenridge. Summerfield beat Breckenridge 6-0 and was ready to play Unionville-Sebewaing (USA) in the finals. Summerfield started out strong building a lead of 5-0 but it soon vanished in the seventh inning to a score of 5-5. In the eighth inning Taylor Goodin was on second and pitcher Emily Puterbaugh came to the plate with two out and hit the ball to the wall scoring the winning run. The Summerfield Bulldogs became they 2011 State Champs winning back to back titles.

Summerfield Pitcher in the 1984 State Champion Team

Michelle Gardner will be entering her third season as the head coach of the Indiana softball program in the 2011 season . She was named the eighth head coach IU softball history on June 9, 2008 after spending the previous six seasons as the head coach at the University of Nevada, where she was named the 2008 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.While at Nevada, Gardner had an overall record of 187-176 and 60-56

Gardner was an assistant coach at Arizona State (1999-2001) and Florida State (1995-1998) helping lead both schools to NCAA Regional appearances and a College World Series appearance at Arizona State. She was also and assistant coach at Bowling Green State University as well as a hitting and pitching instructor at the high school level.

Gardner is a 1989 graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Physical Education, where she was a standout pitcher from 1984-1988. In her senior season, she was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and garnered first team all-region honors as well.

After exhausting her eligibility at Michigan, Gardner participated with several nationally-ranked Amateur Softball Association (ASA) teams in addition to competing in three Olympic festivals.

She was also part of softball's first appearance in the 1996 Olympic Games when she took part in the Olympic Trials.
