Supraorbital vein
Encyclopedia
The supraorbital vein begins on the forehead
where it communicates with the frontal branch of the superficial temporal vein
.
It runs downward superficial to the Frontalis muscle
, and joins the frontal vein
at the medial angle of the orbit to form the angular vein
.
Previous to its junction with the frontal vein, it sends through the supraorbital notch
into the orbit a branch which communicates with the ophthalmic vein; as this vessel passes through the notch, it receives the frontal diploic vein through a foramen at the bottom of the notch.
The areas drained by this vessel are the forehead, eyebrow and upper eyelid.
Forehead
For the Arsenal striker see GervinhoIn human anatomy, the forehead is the fore part of the head. It is, formally, an area of the head bounded by three features, two of the skull and one of the scalp. The top of the forehead is marked by the hairline, the edge of the area where hair on the scalp...
where it communicates with the frontal branch of the superficial temporal vein
Superficial temporal vein
-Path:It begins on the side and vertex of the skull in a plexus which communicates with the frontal vein and supraorbital vein, with the corresponding vein of the opposite side, and with the posterior auricular vein and occipital vein....
.
It runs downward superficial to the Frontalis muscle
Frontalis muscle
The Frontalis muscle , also known as the occipitofrontalis or epicranius, is thin, of a quadrilateral form, and intimately adherent to the superficial fascia. It is broader than the Occipitalis and its fibers are longer and paler in color...
, and joins the frontal vein
Frontal vein
The frontal vein begins on the forehead in a venous plexus which communicates with the frontal branches of the superficial temporal vein....
at the medial angle of the orbit to form the angular vein
Angular vein
The angular vein formed by the junction of the frontal vein and supraorbital vein, runs obliquely downward, on the side of the root of the nose, to the level of the lower margin of the orbit, where it becomes the anterior facial vein....
.
Previous to its junction with the frontal vein, it sends through the supraorbital notch
Supraorbital notch
The Supraorbital notch is a small groove at superior and medial margin of the orbit in the frontal bone. The supraorbital nerve passes through this notch prior to dividing into superficial and deep components that provide sensory innervation to the ipsilateral forehead...
