In early life she was a teacher and then head teacher of a primary school in the Dordogne

. She became a militant socialist in 1906 and was the only woman in her area to be a member of a political party. In 1936 she was one of three women ministers in the Front populaire ( "Popular Front"), along with Cécile Brunschvicg
